The election took place on 21 August 1983.
Up to eight seats, in addition to those contested in the multimember constituency contests, are allocated to "best losers" by the Electoral Supervisory Commission "[i]n order to ensure a fair and adequate representation of each community", in terms of Section 38 of the Constitution of 1968. In 1983 all eight best loser seats were allocated.
According to Lodge et al (2002, 168) voting statistics were:
Registered voters: 552 800
Votes cast: 452 221
The Alliance was a coalition of the Mouvement Socialiste Mauricien (MSM), the Labour Party (LP or PTr) and Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate (PMSD) Lodge et al (2002, 168).
